Here is my third edition of MMA predictions featuring UFC on Fuel TV 2, in Sweden, with the headliner being between young prospect Alexander ‘The Mauler’ Gustafsson and veteran Thiago Silva.
Brad Pickett vs Damacio Page
A significant fight within the bantamweight division as two WEC veterans face off and hope to start a run, in a stacked division. Pickett is coming off of a tough first round submission loss to highly regarded Renan Barao in a fight of the night performance at UFC 138. Page is also coming off of a first round submission lost, for the second time in the exactly same fashion against Brian Bowles at UFC Live: Sanchez vs Kampmann. I feel that Pickett is more well rounded and will be at more at an advantage taking this fight to the ground and securing a submission victory as this seems to be Page’s achilles heel as he has suffered back to back submission losses.
Winner – Brad Pickett, Submission – Round 2.
DaMarques Johnson vs John Maguire
Here is a welterweight bout between TUF 9 runner up DaMarques and British prospect John Maguire looking to get a foot hold in a division which is currently in a strange state. Johnson is coming off of an impressive first round knockout of Clay Harvison at UFC on FOX 1. While Maguire is currently running a 7 fight win streak including his UFC debut at UFC 138, which was a decision victory over Justin Edwards. This fight is a classic striker vs grapple macth up and with grapplers winning 70% of these match ups i’m gunna have to say Maguire is going control this fight on the ground on the way to a decision victory, although Johnson has shown submission skills from his back in previous bouts which Maguire will have to be wary of.
Winner – John Maguire, Decision – Round 3.
Dennis Siver vs Diego Nunes
A highly significant fight within the featherweight division where a lightweight veteran, Dennis Siver, will make his debut in a division against a top 10 ranked fighter, Diego Nunes. Dennis Siver is coming into this fight from a 1st round submission loss to top lightweight Donald Cerrone in which Siver was outclassed on the feet then was dropped and submitted in a quick fashion by the WEC vet. Nunes is going into this fight off of a back and forth battle with Manvel Gamburyan, which he won by decision. This match up is a contender for the fight of the night award with both fighters being explosive strikers looking to trade with each other and entertain the fans! I can see this being a faster paced version of Siver’s fight with Ross Pearson at UFC Fight Night: Florian vs. Gomi with maybe Siver controlling the fight more by using is size advantage to wear down Nunes, like shown previously by Florian.
Winner – Dennis Siver, Decision – Round 3.
Paulo Thiago vs Siyar Bahadurzada
A classic match up between striker vs grappler in a welterweight division full of strong wrestlers. Paulo Thiago is coming off of a decision victory over David Mitchell at UFC 134 in Brazil. Siyar Bahadurzada is currently riding a 6 fight win streak outside the UFC and also making his UFC debut. The striker, Bahadurzada, will have to display a stick and move strategy and avoid takedowns at all cost with Thiago being a black belt in BBJ and highly touted grappler. Thiago although not a powerful wrestler will use unorthodox BJJ takedowns to get this fight to the ground and look to set up submissions. With this being Bahadurzada’s biggest fight to date, against a veteran of the UFC who has fought many big names within the division, the famous UFC jitters may effect him and his performance.
Winner – Paulo Thiago, Decision – Round 3.
Brian Stann vs Alessio Sakara
Here is a top 15 Middleweight fight between highly regarded Brian Stann vs middleweight veteran Alessio Sakara. Brain Stann is coming off of a disappointing submission loss to ranked number 2 middleweight, Chael Sonnen at UFC 136 and is looking to get a streak going again and work towards a title shot. Alessio Sakara is also coming off of a loss to top young prospect Chris Weidman by decision at UFC Live: Sanchez vs. Kampmann and is looking to rocket into the top 10 rankings with a win over Stann. Another contender for fight of the night with both fighters being stand up fighters and looking to trade back and forth with each other. I’ve got Stann taking this one although they are both great strikers it seems that Sakara has had trouble in the past with power punchers.
Winner – Brain Stann, TKO – Round 2.
Alexander Gustafsson vs Thiago Silva
This match-up is an important light heavyweight fight between a young prospect Alexander Gustafsson and deadly striker Thiago Silva. Gustafsson is coming into this fight off of a first round knockout of MMA veteran Vladimir Matyushenko at UFC 141 and is currently 5-1 in the UFC. Thiago Silva is famously coming off of a fight with Brandon Vera at UFC 125 which was originally a decision victory but after using non human urine in a post fight drugs test the result was overturned to a draw and was given a year suspension. This is Silva’s first fight back after his year long suspension and is looking to come back and make a statement by finishing Gustafsson and get the attention in a division overshadowed by Jon Jones. Factor we will have to take into account for this fight is experience and ring rust. Obviously the experience factor goes to Thiago Silva who has fought top contenders within the division for example Lyoto Machida, Rashad Evans and Keith Jardine, whereas Gustafsson has fought 3 times while Silva has been out due to suspension. I’ve got a feeling ring rust and Gustafsson’s talent maybe enough for Gustafsson to grab a late TKO victory.
Winner – Alexander Gustafsson, TKO – Round 3.
