UFC on FUEL TV 3: Korean Zombie vs Poirier Predictions

Here is another addition of MMA predictions featuring UFC on FUEL TV 3: Korean Zombie vs Poirier,  which is being held on the 6th May at the Patriots Stadium in Fairfax, Virginia USA. The headlining bout is a #1 contender fight, with the winner getting a shot at the UFC featherweight title, between young fast rising prospect Dustin ‘The Diamond’ Poirier and fan favourite ‘The Korean Zombie’ Chan Sung Jung.

Korean Zombie vs Poirier

All rights to Zuffa

Jason McDonald(25-15) vs Tom Lawler(7-4 [1 no contest])

An important fight for both middleweights, that will determine their future in the UFC depending on the outcome. Jason McDonald is entering this fight off of a submission loss, due to strikes, against UFC vet Alan Belcher at UFC Fight Night: Shields vs. Ellenberger. Tom Lawler is coming into this fight also off of a submission loss to young fast rising prospect Chris Weidman at UFC 139. With both of their UFC careers on the line this may turn out to be a highly conservative fight. This is a hard fight to call but I feel like Jason McDonald has the edge in the submission department and will looking to get hold of Lawler’s neck at any chance he can get.

Winner: Jason McDonald, Submission – Round 3.

Igor Pokrajac(24-8) vs  Fabio Maldonado(18-4)

A light heavyweight bout between two strikers that are looking to gain some momentum in a division dominated by current champ Jon Jones. Igor Pokrajac is coming into this fight with a huge 35 second KO victory over UFC veteran  Krzysztof Soszynski at UFC 140. Fabio Maldonado is entering the bout after a decision loss to Kyle Kingsbury at The Ultimate Fighter 13 Finale and won fight of the night honors for the stand up war between the two fighters. Maldonado has solid technical boxing with previous professional boxing experience and possess nasty body shots while Pokrajac has more experience against better competition then Maldonado.  This fight will defiantly center around the striking game, with Maldonado having more technique and Pokrajac possessing more power. Pokrajac will be more likely to miss things up by using more kicks were Maldonado will more than likely just use his hands and by mixing it up Pokrajac will have an edge finding holes in Maldonado’s striking.

Winner: Igor Pokrajac, Decision – Round 3.

Yves Jabouin(17-7) vs  Jeff Hougland(10-4)

A bantamweight fight between striker Yves Jabouin and grappler Jeff Hougland who are looking to climb up the 135 pound division. Jabouin is coming into this fight on a 2 fight win streak and is currently 2-1 in the UFC after merging from the WEC. Hougland is coming into this fight with a decision victory in his UFC debut against Donny Walker at UFC 132 and is on a 8 fight win streak. Yves Jabouin has a lot more experience against top tier fighters in both the WEC and UFC and i can see him win this fight late in the second round.

Winner: Yves Jabouin, TKO – Round 2.

Donald Cerrone(17-4) vs  Jeremy Stephens(20-7)

Here is an important lightweight fight with the winner cementing a place in the top 10 rankings of their respected division. Cerrone is coming into this fight off of a fight of the night loss to #1 contender Nate Diaz at UFC 140. Stephens is coming into this fight with a lose to top contender Anthony Pettis vai split decision at UFC 136. Looking at this fight stylistically it seems that both fighters will be looking to show off their kickboxing skills, with Cerrone having a slight edge in the stand up. I can see Cerrone catching Stephens with a punch than finishing the fight on the floor via a submission  or TKO by ground and pound.

Winner: Donald Cerrone, TKO – Round 2.

Amir Sadollah(5-3) vs  Jorge Lopez(11-2)

A welterweight match up between TUF 7 winner Amir Sadollah and well-rounded Jorge Lopez, who are both looking to get back into the win column. Sadollah is entering this bout after a unanimous decision loss to Duane ‘Bang’ Ludwig  at UFC Live: Hardy vs. Lytle. Lopez is also coming into this fight off of a unanimous decision loss to the hands of TUF 13 fighter Justin Edwards at UFC Fight Night: Shields vs. Ellenberger. With Sadollah possessing a much higher level of striking experience Lopez will have to look at getting this fight to the ground at any opportunity given to him. To be honest this seems like a bit of a free gimme to a the TUF 7 winner who deservingly is a huge favourite in this match but I’ve said the same sort of thing many times and have eaten my works for it, but I think ill stick to my guns on this one.

Winner: Amir Sadollah, TKO – Round 2.

Chan Sung Jung(12-3) vs  Dustin Poirier(12-1)

A potential #1 contender match up between always entertaining and winner of Fight of the Year 2010 and Submission of the Year 2011 ‘The Korean Zombie’ Chan Sung Jung and fast rising young prospect Dustin ‘The Diamond’ Poirier. The Korean Zombie is currently on an amazing streak of a Submission of the Year and submission of the night victory against Leonard Garcia and a 7 second and knock out of the night KO victory over former #1 contender Mark Hominick. Poirier is currently on a tear since dropping down to the featherweight division once joining the UFC and is currently on a 4 fight win streak in the UFC and is coming into this fight with a first round submission victory over Max Holloway at UFC 143 which won submission of the night. This fight has all the makings of a great fight with both fighters well versed in the stand up and ground game  this fight could end up anywhere! Also with Korean Zombie’s fame for having exciting fights I feel this will only bring out the best in Poirier. With both fighters so evenly matched this has been a hard one to predict but I think that Jung may edge this one with sharper striking and implying a high pressure attack that will keep the Poirier moving backwards. I’ve gone for zombie winning just from watching previous fights of Poirier fighting Jason Young were Dustin stole rounds by easily taking Young down after Young was lighting up Poirier on the feet.

Winner : Chan Sung Jung, TKO – Round 4.

Preliminary Fights – Predicted winners in bold.

Cody McKenzie vs. Marcus LeVesseur – Sub R1
Brad Tavares vs. Yang Dongi – Decision R3
TJ Grant vs. Carlo Prater – Decision R3
Rafael dos Anjos vs. Kamal Shalorus – Sub R3
Jeff Curran vs. Johnny Eduardo – TKO R1
Alex Soto vs. Francisco Rivera – TKO R2
