UFC 146: Dos Santos vs. Mir Predictions

Here is another addition of MMA predictions featuring UFC 146: Dos Santos vs. Mir,  which is being held on the 26th May  at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. The headlining bout is a Heavyweight Championship fight between champion and elite striker Junior ‘Cigano’ dos Santos and one of the best heavyweight submission artists of all time challenger Frank Mir.

Stefan Struve(23-5) vs.  Lavar Johnson(17-5)

A heavyweight match-up that has the potential to pick up a ‘of the Night’ award for any three of the awards, (Submission of the Night, Knockout of the Night and Fight of the Night), between well-rounded Dutch fighter Stefan ‘Skyscraper’ Struve and heavy-handed finisher Lavar Johnson. Struve is coming into this fight off of a TKO victory over Dave Herman at UFC on Fuel TV: Sanchez vs. Ellenberger. Johnson is entering this fight with a TKO victory over veteran kickboxer Pat Barry at UFC on Fox: Diaz vs. Miller and has obtained two Knockout of the Night awards in both of his UFC appearances. This fight will be decided on what happens in the first round. Struve is known to not start well whereas Johnson is known to start well but fade the longer the fight goes. Also Struve has shown signs of a suspect chin and this could be a problem with fighting one of the hardest punchers in the division! Johnson although the more powerful puncher of the two is known to be below par to current UFC fighters in the grappling department and submission defence with all his losses except one being via submission and this is one of Struve’s strengths, with winning the majority of his fights by submission. In this fight I just feel that Lavar Johnsons power and Struve being a slow starter that Johnson could swarm Struve and earn a TKO finish by backing him up against the cage.

Winner: Lavar Johnson, KO – Round 1.

Stipe Miočić(8-0) vs.  Shane del Rosario(11-0)

Another heavyweight matchup between two undefeated MMA fighters, looking to stay undefeated in a deep heavyweight division since the Strikeforce importing of their Heavyweight division, Stipe Miočić and Shane del Rosario. Stipe Miočić is entering this fight with an impressive second UFC apperance which he won by KO in 43 seconds against Phil De Fries at UFC on Fuel TV: Sanchez vs. Ellenberger. Shane del Rosario is making his UFC debut and his first fight since the Strikeforce heavyweight import; his last fight was against Lavar Johnson which he won by first round submission at Strikeforce: Fedor vs. Silva. Both fighters have great stand up with del Rosario having previous professional kickboxing experience and Miočić being a Golden Gloves Champion (Boxing) but the real factor in this fight is Miočić’s elite NCAA Division 1 level wrestling that lets him dictate where the fight takes place and that will be the deciding factor in this fight.

Winner: Stipe Miočić, TKO – Round 3.

Roy Nelson(16–7) vs.  Dave Herman(21-3)

A heavyweight fight between two fighters that really need a win to help keep their jobs in the UFC as both fighters are coming off tough losses in their last outings. Nelson is coming into this fight with a Fight of the Night decision loss to Fabricio Werdum at UFC 143 were he displayed his well-known granite chin by taking powerful knees to the face! Herman is entering the fight on short notice and last fight was against Stefan Struve at UFC on Fuel TV: Sanchez vs. Ellenberger were he lost by TKO in the second round. This fight is fairly even on the feet but on the ground Nelson is leagues ahead of Herman, being a long time BJJ black belt. With Nelson being so durable and having stand out skills on the ground I feel this fight plays more in favour of Nelson who should pick up a win after fighting more experienced and top-tier fighters in the UFC in his last 5 fights.

Winner: Roy Nelson, TKO – Round 3.

Cain Velasquez(9-1) vs.  Antonio Silva(16-3)

A #1 contender fight for a shot at the UFC heavyweight title between former champion Cain Velasquez and Strikeforce import Antonio ‘Big Foot’ Silva. Cain Velasquez is coming into this fight off of his first ever career loss against Junior dos Santos at UFC on FOX 1 via first round KO and losing his title in the process. Big Foot Silva is also entering this fight after a loss to now Strikeforce Grand Prix champion Daniel Cormier in the semi final at Strikeforce: Barnett vs. Kharitonov. By looking at two of Silva’s last two fights we can see what the outcome of this fight will probably shape out to be. In Silva’s fight against Fedor Emelianenko he used his size to dominate the smaller sized heavyweight Fedor on the ground and unleash brutal ground and pound. I can see this being Big Foot’s game plan! He will try to use his size to take the smaller heavyweight Velasquez down and drop his boulder fists on Velasquez’s face. Although looking at his previous fight against Cormier, who is very similar to Velasquez in many ways, Cormier used his wrestling, speed and sharp boxing to keep the fight standing and expose Big Foot’s suspect chin to gain the victory. Velasquez will use Cormier’s strategy, to use defensive wrestling and speed  to keep the fight standing and get in and out of Silva’s range and pick the giant apart  before dropping him and finishing the fight via TKO.

Winner: Cain Velasquez, TKO – Round 1.

Junior dos Santos(14-1) vs.  Frank Mir(16-5)

A UFC heavyweight title fight between current UFC heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos and one of the best heavyweight submission artist of all time and 2x time UFC heavyweight champion  Frank Mir. dos Santos is coming into this fight off of a first round knock-out of Cain Velasquez which won him the title at UFC on FOX 1. Frank Mir is entering this fight off of a career defining fight were he submitted and broke MMA legend Antônio Rodrigo Nogueira at UFC 140, this fight also won Submission of the Night and Submission of the Year 2011 awards. Although both fighters are well-rounded at all aspects of MMA their primary skills that each fighter relies on during fights makes this a typical striker versus grappler match up. dos Santos will be looking to avoid the ground against arguably the best MMA heavyweight submission fighter of all time and use his take down defense to keep the fight standing and use his boxing to finish Mir on the feet. Mir will more than likely try to stand with dos Santos until he gets clipped and then he will dive for a leg and try to use the cage to get the champion to the mat. I feel like it is going to be extremely hard for dos Santos to get taken down by Mir, eliminating his best chance Mir has of winning this fight and ultimately exposing Mir on the feet.

Winner:  Junior dos Santos, TKO – Round 2.

Preliminary Fights – Predicted winners in bold & red.

Diego Brandao vs. Darren Elkins – SUB, R2
Edson Barboza vs. Jamie Varner – KO, R1
Jason Miller vs. C.B. Dollaway – DEC, R3
Dan Hardy vs. Duane Ludwig – DEC, R3
Jacob Volkmann vs. Paul Sass – SUB, R2
Kyle Kingsbury vs. Glover Teixeira – DEC, R3
