UFC on FX: Johnson vs. McCall Predictions

Here is another addition of MMA predictions featuring UFC on FX: Johnson vs. McCall,  which is being held on the June 8, 2012 at the BankAtlantic Center in Sunrise, Florida, United States. The headlining fight is a flyweight title eliminator fight, with the winner fighting Joseph Benavidez for the first ever UFC Flyweight title, between former bantamweight contender Demetrious ‘Mighty Mouse’ Johnson and arguably the #1 ranked flyweight in the world Ian ‘Uncle Creepy’ McCall.

Predictions

Eddie Wineland(18–8–1) vs Scott Jorgensen(13–5)

A top 10 ranked bantamweight matchup between former WEC champion Eddie Wineland and former #1 contender  Scott ‘Young Guns’ Jorgensen. Wineland is currently in a two fight losing streak with losses to Team Alpha Male stand outs Urijah Faber and Joseph Benavidez; both by decision. Jorgensen is entering this fight with a loss to Renan Barão, who is now fighting Faber for the Interim Bantamweight title, Jorgensen lost by decision at UFC 143. Wineland in his past couple of fights has in my opinion been given some short straws fighting two of the best  three bantamweights who both have strong wrestling to neutralize Wineland’s striking. Unfortunately it’s happened again with Jorgensen, who is an accomplished amateur wrestler and has confidence in his hands to mix up his attack and keep his opponent guessing. Although Wineland is a skilled fighter he is too one dimensional when fighting many of the top bantamweights in the world! Unless he can establish good takedown defense I can see Jorgensen grinding out a decision like Wineland’s previous two opponents did.

My Winner: Scott Jorgensen, Decision – Round 3.

Mike Pyle(22-8-1) vs Josh Neer(33–10–1)

A welterweight fight between two UFC and MMA veterans, Mike ‘Quicksand’ Pyle and Josh ‘The Dentist’ Neer; both are looking to collect  victories over accomplished opponents and work towards their last chance of get a UFC championship. Pyle is entering this fight with a quick technical knockout victory over Ricardo Funch at UFC 142 in Brazil. Josh Neer is coming into this fight off of a comeback from behind submission victory over striker Duane Ludwig at UFC on FX: Guillard vs Miller. Both fighters are very evenly matched and both have well rounded skills and is a hard one to predict. Although I can see Pyle using his wrestling to depict the fight and steal rounds over a tough Neer, by using the cage for takedowns and controlling the top position for a close decision victory.

My Winner: Mike Pyle, Decision – Round 3.

Erick Silva(13–2 (1)) vs Charlie Brenneman(15–3)

Another welterweight match-up between to promising fighters looking to test their skill set and prove they are worthy of top tier fighters in a stacked division. Eric Silva is coming off of a controversial DQ loss to Carlo Prater at UFC 142 due to strikes to the back of the head of Prater. Charlie Brenneman is entering this fight with a victory over  Daniel Roberts at UFC on FX: Guillard vs. Miller and used his wrestling to win a lay and pray decision. I can see the main reason for this fighting being booked is to see how the fast rising Brazilian Silva, who has basically murdered all his UFC opponents instantly on the feet, deals with an experienced wrestler. And that is what makes this fight so hard to predict, as Silva has never faced a wrestler. Brennan has struggled with many quick and powerful strikers such as Anthony Johnson and Johny Hendricks. Silva will try to use his speed and aggressive style to wait for Brenneman to commit to a sloppy strike then charge him and clip him while he is backtracking and finish the fight with some ground and pound. Brenneman will look to control the fight using effective takedowns to win rounds on the scorecards. I can see Silva’s aggressive style being to much for Brenneman and will earn a TKO victory in the first round.

My Winner: Erick Silva, TKO – Round 1.

Demetrious Johnson(14-2-1) vs Ian McCall(11-2-1)

The long awaited Flyweight Tournament Semifinal rematch that happened at UFC on FX: Alves vs. Kampmann between two fast action pack fighters looking for a place in the final against Joseph Benavidez for the first ever UFC Flyweight title. Both fighters are entering this fight with a draw against each other which won Fight of the Night award honors at UFC on FX: Alves vs. Kampmann. Since their first fight back in March I’ve been anticipating their rematch. The fight really made a statement and showed that the long awaited Flyweight division deserves a place in the premier MMA organization! With this being a 5 round fight I can see this coming to cardio, especially with the high paced fights the 125’ers set  and the amount of energy being used every round. From looking at the previous fight Johnson seemed to fade as the fight went on and nearly was finished in the final round of their previous fight and McCall seemed to find his grove the longer the fight went on. I’ve got this fight going the same way it did previously but with the extra two rounds this time McCall will be able to pull off of a close decision maybe winning 3 out of 5 rounds.

My Winner: Ian McCall, Decision – Round 5.
