UFC on FX: Maynard vs. Guida Predictions

Here is another addition of MMA predictions featuring UFC on FX: Maynard vs. Guida,  which is being held on the 22nd June 2012 at the Revel Casino in Atlantic City, New Jersey, United States. The headlining bout is between two top lightweights looking to get back into the title shot picture of the most stacked division in MMA, Gray ‘The Bully’ Maynard and Clay ‘The Carpenter’ Guida.

All Rights to Zuffa

Ross Pearson(13–5) vs Cub Swanson(16–5)

A featherweight match-up between two top flight featherweights looking to take an opening and build a quick title shot campaign in a division currently low on title contenders.  Pearson is entering this fight with a decision victory over Junior Assunção in his featherweight debut at UFC 141. Swanson is coming into this fight off of an impressive second round KO victory over Zuffa veteran George Roop at UFC on Fox: Evans vs Davis. This is an important fight for both fighters but more so for Pearson, who is trying to prove his worth in his new division. Pearson could really make a statement to other top featherweights with a win against Swanson who is a featherweight veteran and has fought many of the top featherweights; Chad Mendes and Jose Aldo. I can see this fight being mostly a stand up fight with maybe the first takedown being established by Cub Swanson to mix up his attack. Pearson will try to use a sprawl and brawl game plan and use his more technical kickboxing skills to scored and win rounds, frustrating Swanson. Swanson will at first look to strike then mix up things up by using his wrestling to neutralize Pearson’s stand up abilities and keep Pearson guessing. I can see this fight going in Pearson’s favor with him getting the better in the exchanges and on the judge’s scorecards.

My Winner: Ross Pearson, Decision – Round 3.

Brian Ebersole(49–14–1 (1)) vs TJ Waldburger(15–6)

A welterweight fight between a MMA veteran, Brian Ebersole, and submission specialist, TJ Waldburger. Ebersole is coming into this fight off of a close split decision victory over Canadian grappler Claude Patrick at UFC 140. Waldburger is entering this fight with a quick submission victory over Jake Hecht at UFC on FX: Alves vs. Kampmann. Waldburger will be looking to take this fight to the ground as soon as possible and use his BJJ skills to lock up a submission. Ebersole will look to keep distance between him and Waldburger and use effective boxing to get in and out before Waldburger can grab a hold of him. I feel that with Ebersole’s vast MMA experience he will be able to avoid Waldburger’s submission attempts and look to get back to his feet and use his unorthodox striking to either catch Waldburger and finish him via TKO in a similar way to his fight with MMA veteran Dennis Hallman).

My Winner: Brian Ebersole, TKO – Round 2.

Sam Stout(17–7–1) vs Spencer Fisher(24–8)

The rubber match between the fan friendly strikers Sam ‘Hands of Stone’ Stout and Spencer ‘The King’ Fisher. Sam Stout is coming into this fight after a decision loss to Thiago Tavares at UFC 142 in Brazil. Fisher is coming into this fight also after a loss to Thiago Tavares at UFC 134 via TKO. With Fisher coming into the twilight of his career, having nearly a whole year out of the cage and only winning 1 of his last 5 fights in the UFC I can see this fight being his retirement fight against a fighter who has brought out the best in him in both of their previous fights. With both previous bouts being very similar fights I can’t see this one being any different. I’ve feel this fight is going to be fought on the feet for the majority of the bout with maybe a couple of takedowns to mix up their attack and keep the other fighter guessing on when the next takedown will come. I’ve got Stout taking this one with him having a crisper technical striking ability and getting the better in the exchanges.

My Winner: Sam Stout, TKO – Round 3.

Gray Maynard(10–1–1 (1)) vs Clay Guida(29–12)

A huge fight in the lightweight division between former #1 contender Gray Maynard and highly regarded Clay Guida. Maynard is entering this fight after his first professional MMA loss to former champion Frankie Edgar in their title fight at UFC 136 via TKO. Guida is coming into this fight also after a loss to now champion Ben Henderson by decision at UFC on Fox: Velasquez vs. Dos Santos. It is no secret what the two possible outcomes of this fight. Maynard could come out strong as expected using his heavy hands to hurt Guida and use takedowns in the later rounds to ride out a decision victory. The other possible chance could be similar to Maynard’s fights with Edgar, Guida could copy this strategy and look to use his amazing cardio to weather the early storm then stage a comeback on Maynard who is known to fade during the later rounds. With this also being a 5 round fight this only plays into Guida’s favour aslong as he can keep Maynard at bay in the first two rounds of the fight and is not too busted up to have to fight hard in the later rounds. I got Maynard starting extremely strong hurting Guida multiple times at the start of the fight and working methodically with takedowns and picking his punches, learning from his Edgar fights to pace himself to earn a unanimous decision victory and move a step closer to another title shot.

My Winner: Gray Maynard, Decision – Round 5.
