Main Card Fights

***************************************************************************

DaMarques Johnson(16-10) vs. Mike Swick(14-4)

After a 2 year lay off due to illness TUF 1 veteran Mike Swick is making his long-awaited return to the Octagon against TUF 9 runner-up DaMarques Johnson. I can see this fight being a great stand up affair with Swick looking to use his speed and 2″ inch reach advantage to avoid Johnson’s power. Johnson may look to counter Swick’s speed with power punches and replicate Dan Hardy’s victory over Swick which involved  using counter striking to hurt Swick Multiple times throughout the fight. Also Johnson could set a high tempo paced fight which could help gas Swick who hasn’t fought in over 2 years. I got Swick using his speed and technical striking to outwork Johnson and earning a late TKO victory after countering Johnson as he is coming in.

My Winner: Mike Swick, TKO – Round 3.

Jamie Varner(20-6-1 (2)) vs. Joe Lauzon(21–7)

This fight is a very hard one to call with Varner looking so impressive against highly touted Barboza and Lauzon possessing a good rounded game that could pose many problems to Varner. Varner uses his hard-hitting boxing skills and combines this with his wrestling ability, while Joe Lauzon uses quick striking to catch his opponent then follows up with impressive BJJ skills on the mat. Lauzon has shown in the past that after a loss he comes back and shows huge improvements in his game. Varner will look to keep the fight standing by using defensive wrestling and use his boxing to hurt and finish Lauzon. Lauzon will look to rush Varner early in typical Lauzon fashion looking to clip the former WEC champion and follow-up with securing a submission for the victory. I got Lauzon taking this fight just by out working Varner on the feet and winning the fight on the judges scorecards.

My Winner: Joe Lauzon, Decision  – Round 3.

Lyoto Machida(17–3) vs. Ryan Bader(14–2)

An important match up in the Light-Heavyweight division with both fighters looking to help themselves earn redemption in a rematch against current UFC champion Jon Jones. Lyoto Machida is looking to rebound from a title fight loss against Jon Jones in a fight he was winning until getting rocked by the Light-Heavyweight phenom then getting submitting  by a vicious guillotine. Ryan Bader is coming off of the best fight of his career with a decision victory over former UFC champion ‘Rampage’ Jackson. Ryan will look to use his speed to get a hold of the very elusive Machida by using his wrestling to hold Machida down and work some ground and pound; although this game-plan has never really work for wrestlers against Machida. Machida will look to use his trademark karate style to counter strike his opponent’s strikes and grappling attempts. Machida has shown time and time again his effectiveness against wrestler based fighters and will finish Bader via strikes.

My Winner: Lyoto Machida, KO – Round 2.

Mauricio Rua(20–6) vs. Brandon Vera(12–5 (1))

Many are calling this a mismatch fight between former UFC champion Mauricio ‘Shogun’ Rua and Branden ‘The Truth’ Vera with Vera only winning 1 of his past 4 fights. With such a mismatch in abilities i really can not see how Rua could loss this unless he gets caught by Vera which is very unlikely. Rua also always shows added aggression in is attack after a loss and i can see this being a brutal finish of Vera who in his last fight was fighting for his UFC career. Vera although has very solid striking he is not on Rua’s level when in comes to competition or experience. Vera is in for a rough night and will fall victim to a brutal KO lose to a MMA legend in Mauricio Rua.

My Winner: Mauricio Rua, KO – Round 1.
