UFC 153: Silva vs Bonnar Predictions

Here is another addition of MMA predictions featuring UFC 153: Silva vs. Bonnar,  which is being held on the 13th October 2012 at  the HSBC Arena in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The headlining fight is a three round non-title Light-Heavyweight bout between Middleweight champion & MMA kingpin Anderson ‘The Spider’ Silva and  TUF 1 runner-up, ‘The American Psycho’ Stephan Bonnar.

Main Card Fights

***************************************************************************

Demian Maia(16–4) vs Rick Story(14–5)

Grappling phenom Demian Maia will fight in his sophomore appearance in the Welterweight division against UFC Welterweight veteran Rick Story. Story will look to use defensive wrestling throughout the fight to avoid hitting the mat with the Jui Jitsu master and use his powerful strikes to pressure the Brazilian. Maia will look to used his vastly improved striking to jab in close to Story then grab ahold of him and work for a trip or takedown and work his magic on the floor. I have Maia being able to get this fight to the ground then catching his opponent in a submission for the victory.

My Winner: Demian Maia, Submission – Round 2.

Phil Davis(9-1 (1)) vs Wagner Prado(8–0 (1))

A rematch to the ‘no-contested’ that was awarded in their first fight back at UFC on Fox: Shogun vs. Vera after an accidental eye-poke from Phil Davis. Prado is another young Brazilian prospect looking to explode on MMA’s biggest stage with a win over top ranked Phil Davis and will look to use his skillful Muay Thai to finish his highly regarded opponent. Davis will look to use his amazing wrestling and top game to control the fight and use effective ground and pound for the win after a disappointing loss to top contender Rashad Evans in his last ‘real’ contest. I have Phil Davis riding out a decision victory, using his wrestling and top control to nullify Prado’s striking advantage.

My Winner: Phil Davis, Decision – Round 3.

Jon Fitch(23–4–1 (1)) vs Erick Silva(15–2 (1))

Another striker versus wrestler match-up with huge ramifications for the winner, that is if your name is not Jon Fitch. Slowly the UFC has been grooming Silva to be the new top contender after quick finishes over his last three performances in the Octagon and look to solidify his status as a top contender if he beats long time Welterweight contender Jon Fitch. Unfortunately this fight really will not help Fitch whatever the result. With Fitch’s ‘boring’ wrestling grinding style he is not a real draw for a title fight anytime soon especially after his quick knockout to Johny Hendricks in his last fight. If Fitch wins no one will take note as he may be expected to beat the young inexperienced Brazilian and if he loses he will have no chance of ever fighting for UFC gold ever again. Although Silva has the home advantage and has fought and beat wrestler Charlie Brenneman, Fitch is a completely different animal and I have Fitch grinding out another decision victory.

My Winner: Jon Fitch, Decision – Round 3.

Glover Teixeira(18-2) vs Fabio Maldonado(18–5)

A replacement fight for the originally scheduled bout between Teixeira and Rampage Jackson. Teixeira has a huge amount of hype behind him and is looking to string a few high-profile wins together for a future title shot. Due to Rampage pulling out this fight won’t help his title campaign but an impressive win over Maldonado can only help get even more excitement behind him for the casual MMA fan. Maldonado will look to use his boxing skills and impressive body shots to slow down Teixeira in the later rounds. Teixeira will look to adjust to the situation during the fight and use his well-rounded skills to find Maldonado’s weaknesses. I have Teixeira steamrolling rolling Maldonado in the first round via TKO from strikes on the ground.

My Winner: Glover Teixeira, TKO – Round 1.

Antônio Rodrigo Nogueira(33–7–1 (1)) vs Dave Herman(21–4)

A short notice fight quickly put together between two entertaining Heavyweights looking to be a considered ‘in the mix’ once again. MMA legend Antônio Rodrigo Nogueira is looking to rebound of off a very disappointing submission loss to rival Frank Mir and asked for this short notice fight to redeem himself. Dave Herman is also looking to rebound from his 2 fight losing streak after loses to Roy Nelson and Stefan Struve. Both have good stand up with the sharper boxing going to Big Nog and the obvious advantage on the ground also goes to Big Nog. Big Nog just has so many advantages over Herman and has a lot more ways of winning and controlling the fight that I have to go with Nogueira winning this fight.

My Winner: Antônio Rodrigo Nogueira, Submission – Round 1.

Anderson Silva(32–4) vs Stephan Bonnar(15–7)

Another short notice fight that involves arguably the greatest MMA fighter of all time and current UFC Middleweight champion Anderson Silva and TUF 1 runner-up Stephen Bonnar in a 3 round Light-Heavyweight bout. Although this is sure to be a great fight between Bonnar’s chin and Silva’s striking skills it is sure to be a very one-sided fight. Silva has dominated the UFC’s Middleweight division for many years now, while Bonnar had struggled to keep his job before his recent 3 fight win streak. Silva is sure to out strike the fan favourite Bonnar and I’ve got Silva getting a dominating decision victory.

My Winner: Anderson Silva, Decision – Round 3.

Preliminary Fights (predicted winners in bold & red)

Rony Mariano Bezerra vs Sam Sicilia – DEC, R3

Gabriel Gonzaga vs Geronimo dos Santos – (Fight cancelled after Geronimo dos Santos got injured)

Gleison Tibau vs Francisco Trinaldo – DEC, R3

Diego Brandao vs Joey Gambino – KO, R1

Sergio Moraes vs Renee Forte – SUB, R2

Luiz Cané vs Chris Camozzi – DEC, R3

Cristiano Marcello vs Reza Madadi – TKO, R2

  1. I like your picks. We have the same exact winners and endeing results for the Main Card except I’m going with the slight underdog Rick Story via Decision. And for the prelims we have the same exact winners but I’m going with Jason via submission because Sicilia doesn’t have the cardio and I just see him getting cut while getting tired before Jason. I got Cane KO/TKo over Camozzi and Madadi via Decision and Moraes scoring the submission in the 1st. Overall though pretty accurate picks. IMO

    • Yeah I think its going to be a real challenge for Silva to finish Bonnar, although Silva may be the only person who can! Its a tough fight to call between Story and Maia but the fact Maia has a strength advantage will help him take this fight to the floor and easily get a sub victory. All of your prelim results are possible I just think Marcello has no chin, Camozzi has a good chin whereas Cane has a suspect chin and could go either way & you’re probably right Jason will finish Sicilia.
